Themed Books for Memory Impaired Adults: Wild Animals
We have found this series of books to be effective tools to engage adults with memory impairment, Dementia and other cognitive difficulties.
We sent these out for testing in UK Dementia settings and despite them being US created, we had wonderful feedback that these could make people really engage when they can't or won't normally.
More information below.
This range of books were purposefully created for adults who have memory impairment.
They are conversational tools to facilitate meaningful activity and social engagement for those with limited attention and concentration skills. This book has the topic of "Wild Animals" and features engaging full colour photography of creatures from the animal kingdom and light-hearted accompanying poetry and verse.
A simple presentation approach makes it easy to focus on content with beautiful full colour photographs presented clearly on plain backgrounds and large print chosen for associated text to aid those with visual impairment. Because a range of age-appropriate content is included, it makes it easy for facilitators to focus on one thing then move onto something else quickly once attention begins to wander.
The emphasis content-wise is on imagery, however there are short quotations, verses, proverbs, interesting facts and poems included in the books too, to vary activities.
There are four themes in the series: Flowers (56908), Colors (56909), Wild Animals (56910), Dogs and Puppies (57026).
These are ideal resources for day centres, residential homes, neuro wards and we had great feedback from Dementia settings when distributed for testing, some of the reports of engagement and the memories that were prompted were really moving. US developed but the occasional word or image differences were dismissed as unproblematic by our reviewers and could be adapted if really required.
