SmILE Therapy: Functional Communication and Social Skills for Deaf Students and Students with Special Needs - Book
SmILE is designed to equip young people who have communication difficulties with the skills to independently and confidently interact in everyday mainstream community settings.
Eight modules build a repertoire of strategies to cope with different face-to-face social situations. These include: entering and leaving, (e.g. shop, office), requesting information or objects, what to do when things don’t go to plan (e.g. given an incorrect item), clarifying/checking information, using different communication techniques and ways to manage environmental obstacles or barriers (e.g. poor lighting, noise etc).
SmILE is a proven programme with clear outcome measures to share with parents, staff, education and health managers. A step-by-step guide explains how to prepare, deliver and evaluate sessions, with photocopiable resources. Case studies are provided for use in mainstream primary/secondary schools or college Special Needs departments. Ideal for educators and therapists or similar support staff.
