Public or Private Card Game
Understanding rules and concepts relating to personal and social care, health, sex and relationships can be challenging for children, particularly those who have Autism or special educational needs and can also be a difficult or complex topic to explain. This specialist resource has been developed, trialled and tested with children in UK SEN schools.
POP is a fun card sorting game requiring various essential social skills including turn-taking, listening and waiting, featuring Spike the Dog. Activities such as using the toilet aren't personalised, but learned and discussed as each scenario Spike encouters is sorted into the concepts of "public" or "private".
The game encourages participation whilst teaching essential skills which often cannot be generalised by children through role modelling. Families have different rules, whilst some children many need additional help with activities of daily living – making personal care not so private. The included booklet features other games and activities to reinforce learning.
